To give a little bit of necessary background information, the allegory takes place during a huge battle between good and evil. During the battle the narrator (who was part of the Lord's army) and a few others had slowly climbed to the top of a mountain where they experienced the manifest presence of the Lord. When the narrator, along with the others, returned to battle after being in the presence of the Lord, they all glowed with the glory of the Lord. In fact, it was so bright that the entire mountain glowed with it.
The narrator looked out over the retreating enemy lines and realized that the army of the Lord was now strong enough to descend the mountain and destroy what was left of the enemy horde. Before he could make a move to do so however, the Holy Spirit (called wisdom) spoke to him and pointed out an entire enemy army that was at the base of the mountain, quietly waiting to ambush all who attempted to leave the mountain. To the narrator's surprise, he could not see what Wisdom was trying to show him because the glory shining from his armor was so bright. He was unable to see into the darkness.
Wisdom then handed the narrator (who really needs a name) a very plain, drab mantle to wear. Slightly insulted that Wisdom would have him wear such a thing, the narrator inquired as to what it was. Wisdom responded (and I quote from the book here), "Humility. You will not be able to see very well without it."
After putting on the mantle, he was able to see much more clearly than before. It was then that he saw an entire enemy army (which he realized was the army of pride).
Suddenly the narrator noticed some of his fellow Christians, who had just returned from the top of the mountain, heading straight into the enemy lines of pride. As these Christians advanced, they were hit with the arrows of pride, but strangely enough they didn't even seem to notice. However, with each arrow that hit them, they became weaker and weaker. Finally they were all carried off to the enemy's prison camps. Sadly enough, they never had any idea what hit them.
After observing this, Wisdom said, "Pride is the hardest enemy to see and it always sneaks up behind you... In some ways, those who have been to the greatest heights are in the greatest danger of falling. You must remember that in this life you can fall from any level... Take heed when you think you stand, lest you fall."

Later the narrator saw an angel bow a knee to him, which confused him because he knew that even the smallest angel was so much more powerful than himself. When he asked the angel why he did this, the angel replied, "Because of the mantle... that is the highest rank in the kingdom... You are clothed in the grace of God. There is no greater power than that! You are [one of] the dreaded champions, the sons and daughters of the King. He wore the same mantle when He walked this Earth. As long as you are clothed in that, there is no power that can stand against you."
