I want to be like the disciples who thought they had their lives all figured out, only to drop it all to follow Jesus. They were fishermen and probably never imagined they would be anything different. Chances are, their father, grandfather, and his father before him were also all fishermen. Why would they be anything else?
However, for some reason, at the very sound of Jesus's voice, they dropped all to follow Him. They left their dreams and their livelihoods behind them and counted them as nothing in comparison. The Bible even says that they left their father sitting in the boat, which I imagine probably irritated the dad to no end. After all, there was work to be done and they just dropped it all to follow Jesus.
When they dropped everything to follow Jesus, Jesus didn't tell them what to expect. He didn't tell them what the rest of their lives would look like or give them the costs and benefits of dropping everything to follow Him. Nevertheless, they didn't seem to be bothered by this. They followed Him without questions or concerns and, in the end, Jesus made them everything they had ever planned to be and more.
Jesus didn't cause them to sacrifice their lives as fishermen - He perfected it and gave it purpose. They were no longer your average fishermen - they were called to something greater. They were excellent fishermen - fishers of men. Do you think they fully understood this from the beginning? I don't think so. However, despite this, they still made the first step - left everything behind and followed Him. They didn't need the details - they were obedient. God took care of the rest.
